In 1875, this grand building opened its doors as
the Albion Hotel formerly the site of an old eye
infirmary, with the main purpose to provide accommodation
for railway passengers using the GWR terminal at
Millbay Station, which was just a few yards away.
Over the years expansion followed until 1904, when
the whole site was redeveloped to produce the building
seen here today. It kept its name the Albion until
the early 1930's when it became The Continental.
By 1974 the hotel had fallen onto hard times and
thus into the hands of the receivers. In 1977 it
was taken over by the Plymouth Hotel Company —
the same firm that had set up the Duke of Cornwall
Hotel. In 1984 it changed hands once again, this
time to Steve Hajiyianni. The Hotel was closed for
a total of six months so that complete renovation
could take place. Bedrooms were knocked down and
reconstructed to ensure all rooms were ensuite.
On 1st May 1985 the hotel was officially opened
as The New Continental Hotel by the then Lord Mayor
Peter Whitfeld. -
